His main research interests are the molecular epidemiology of bacteria. This has been applied to the study of antimicrobial resistance and virulence of bacteria, with a special focus on host specificity, further leading to host pathogen interactions. He has been working of many different bacteria amongst ChlamydiaEnterococciEscherichia coliSalmonella and Staphylococci.  His recent research focus is on alternatives for antimicrobial treatments as bacteriophages.

Johannes Charlier, Kraveat, Belgium
New Content ItemJohannes Charlier graduated as a veterinarian from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (Ghent University) in 2002. From 2002 to 2015, he worked as a researcher at the Laboratory of Parasitology (Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ghent University) and specialized in the diagnosis, epidemiology and economics of helminth infections in ruminants. Since 2007, he is a diplomate member of the European Veterinary Parasitology College. He worked two years as scientific director for Avia-GIS, and in 2017 he started his own consulting activity (Kreavet) with the aim to provide scientific support for sustainable animal health solutions. His research has been published in >70 peer-reviewed articles and has been recognized by several awards including the Peter Nansen Young Scientist Award of the World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology (WAAVP).
Johannes is chair of the COST Action COMBAR – Combatting Anthelmintic Resistance in ruminants (CA 16230) and project manager of DISCONTOOLS, a European project driven by the different stakeholders of animal health to prioritize animal health research for the development of novel diagnostics, vaccines and pharmaceuticals.
Johannes joined the editorial board of BMC Veterinary Research in 2016, and supports the publication of parasitological research with a practical application for veterinarians, farmers and society as a whole.

Matthew Parker, University of Portsmouth, UK
New Content ItemDr Matt Parker is a behavioural biologist with a particular interest in aberrant or abnormal animal behaviour. He studied psychology (BSc, MSc, PhD) at the University of Southampton, completing his PhD in 2008, where he characterised neurocognitive phenotypes associated with stereotypic behaviour in horses. He then moved to the Royal Veterinary College in Hertfordshire, where he worked as a Research Associate studying the behaviour and physiology of animals in intensive farming systems. Following a post-doctoral position in fish behaviour at Queen Mary University of London, he was appointed as lecturer (now senior lecturer) in physiology at the University of Portsmouth. His research interests are primarily focused on gene x environment interactions in the development of neural circuits that underlie psychopathology, and he works on this from both a translational (pre-clinical psychiatry) and applied (abnormal animal behaviour) perspective. He has a particular interest in animal welfare, and individual adaptation to environmental challenges posed by captivity, and resulting neural aberration. He joined the editorial board of BMC Veterinary Research as a Section Editor in 2017
