Study design schematic. Cows (N = 30) were enrolled at 14 or 7 days prepartum (DPP) based on their expected calving date and their blood drawn for beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) analysis. Non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) were also measured at 14 DPP. After calving (gray circle), blood BHB was measured daily for 14 d to determine hyperketonemia (HYK, n = 10) status.
