  1. Statistical associations between independent variables (age, sex) and STT-1, grade of interferometry, TMH and meibomiam gland loss were calculated on the whole study population (n = 150 eyes). Statistical associations between independent variables (age, sex) and TFO were calculated on the subset of individuals visited at Centro Veterinario Specialistico in Rome (n = 100 eyes). Only regression values between age and grade of interferometry are reported in this table, since the frequency distributions of grades of interferometry by sex were evaluated using the Mann–Whitney U test and are reported as a histogram in Fig. 1.
