Spleen weight and bacterial burden of inoculated mice. BALB/c mice were inoculated intraperitoneally with inactivated, low-dose live + inactivated, low dose live, high dose live B. abortus A19, or sterilized saline. Low-dose live- + -inactivated-inoculated mice show reduced splenic bacterial burden during the chronic phase of infection, similar to the mice of the high-dose live vaccine but lower than mice of the other groups. At 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 weeks post-inoculation, mice were euthanized and the spleens were weighed (A) and were used to determine the bacterial burden (B). Data are presented as the mean ± the standard error of the mean (n = 6)
