Origin of the Phoca v. vitulina individuals, whose skulls were analysed in the present study. Most of the specimens (94.2%) originated from the Wadden Sea of Schleswig-Holstein (n = 1680), while the other areas (Wadden Sea of Lower Saxony: n = 78, Wadden Sea of Hamburg and Elbe Estuary: n = 22, Heligoland: n = 7) contributed only small numbers (basemap adapted from Esri, HERE, DeLorme, MapmyIndia, ©OpenStreetMap contributors, and the GIS user community.
