(d) The figure shows a necrotic cartilage canal (asterisks) surrounded by necrotic chondrocytes (arrows), i.e. ischaemic chondronecrosis. Adjacent viable chondrocytes are grouped together several cells within a single lacuna, interpreted as proliferation (arrowhead).
