The continuous curve shows the change, with the percentage of females becoming pregnant in any given year, of the likelihood maximised with respect to the mean and standard deviation of whelping date. The dashed line is drawn at 1.92 below the maximum likelihood. Its intersection with the continuous curve provides 95% confidence limits for the estimate of the percentage of females becoming pregnant in any given year by exploiting the asymptotic chi-squared distribution of the likelihood ratio.
